5.6 mag

Montana of all places, had a 5.6 magnitude earthquake at 10:08 mountain time. You can see it's signature here. Took approximately 4 minutes for the first waves to travel here from Montana.

Kinda cool.

Montana? there's an active fault line in Montana? Wow...

I miss my earthquakes, I'm still waiting for one to hit here.

There's active faults EVERYwhere, just not necessarily very large. And we do have earthquakes here all the time. I've not figured out which ones they are on my seismometer yet, but I will soon. This is actually the most tectonically active portion of the state, thanks to a very large magma body centered directly under us. We have a lot of what are called "micro-quakes". Back in the early 1900's, there were actually several LARGE earthquakes - structural damage was done to some buildings. Then again, on this very loose river deposit, any shaking at all will be amplified.

Whoops... geeking too much.

yeah, by me waiting for one, I mean one that I can feel. Whenever we went for about a year with no 4's or 5's we ended up with either a whole bunc of smaller quakes or (more normally) one good 7 and smal aftershocks. I don't think that NM could deal with real shakers since the buildings are not what I would call earthquake-safe. Oh well...

There's a couple coal mines in Montana and Idaho that have to notify international authorities when they set off their charges, because they use enough ANFO to make it look like a small nuclear weapon going off.

Thats true, I spent the summer in Idaho a few years back. My uncle was building a house not to far away from a rock query and they sent us notifications whenever they where blasting open a new segment.

Huh. But there was that big ol' earthquake in Montana a while back that took out a dam and drowned a bunch of people. I read about it in In Suspect Terrain, so I guess it was like a generation ago, but that's nothing geologic time.
